Worked examples
Standard 12-pack
| Pack price | $24.00 |
| Units in pack | 12 |
| Price per unit | $2.00 |
| Units per $10 | 5 |
$2.00 per unit — the baseline the larger sizes must beat.
Bulk 30-pack
| Pack price | $54.00 |
| Units in pack | 30 |
| Price per unit | $1.80 |
| Units per $10 | 5.56 |
A bigger sticker but a better deal: $1.80 per unit, 10% below the 12-pack.
Frequently asked questions
Why compare by unit price instead of pack price?
Pack prices are not comparable when pack sizes differ — a $24 twelve-pack and a $54 thirty-pack cannot be judged by their stickers. Dividing by the unit count puts every size on the same scale: $2.00 versus $1.80 per unit makes the winner obvious. Retail shelf tags in most US states show unit pricing for exactly this reason.
How much cheaper should larger packs be per unit?
A visible 8–15% per-unit saving per size step is the common ladder in consumables. Less than 5% and customers cannot feel the difference, so they default to the small size; more than 20% and you are training your best customers to buy your worst margin. Check each rung of your size ladder in this calculator before publishing prices.
How do I compare products sold in different units, like ounces vs counts?
Convert both to the same base unit first, then divide. For weight-based goods use price per ounce or per 100g; for countables use price per piece. If one product lists 24 oz and another 1.5 lb, convert the pound to 24 oz and the comparison becomes direct. The math is identical — only the unit label changes.
Does a lower unit price always mean the better buy?
Only if you will actually use the units. Bulk sizes win on paper but lose in practice when product expires, goes stale, or ties up cash you needed elsewhere — a merchant version of the same trap is over-ordering inventory for a per-unit discount. Compare unit prices first, then sanity-check against real consumption or sell-through rates.
