Frequently asked questions
What does the Shopify profit calculator include?
Everything that comes out of a single order: product cost (COGS), the Shopify Payments processing fee (rate plus the 30¢ fixed part), and any shipping you pay rather than the customer. What is left is your per-order contribution, the money that covers overhead, apps and ads, and then becomes profit.
How is this different from the Shopify fee calculator?
The Shopify fee calculator answers "what does Shopify take?": the processing fee alone. This answers "what do I actually keep?" by also subtracting product cost and shipping. A great-looking 2.9% processing fee means nothing if COGS and shipping leave you two dollars of profit; this is the number that tells you.
Does this include Shopify's monthly subscription fee?
No. The plan fee ($39/mo Basic, and up) is fixed overhead, not a per-order cost, so it sits below per-order profit. To find your true all-in margin, take the per-order profit here, multiply by your monthly orders, then subtract the subscription and app fees. Per-order math first, fixed costs second.
How do I raise profit per order on Shopify?
Three levers, in order of impact: raise average order value (bundles, thresholds) so the fixed 30¢ and shipping spread over more revenue; cut landed product cost; and only then optimize the processing rate by moving up a plan once volume justifies it. Chasing the processing fee first is optimizing the smallest number on the page.
