Shopify Fee Calculator

What Shopify Payments takes from each order — and the effective rate once the 30¢ fixed fee is counted.

Shopify Payments fee = order value × plan rate + $0.30 per transaction. On the Basic plan's 2.9% online rate, a $50 order costs $1.75 in processing — you keep $48.25 and the effective rate is 3.5%, not 2.9%, because of the fixed 30 cents. Higher plans buy lower rates (Shopify plan ~2.7%, Advanced ~2.5%), which is pure margin at volume. Enter your average order value and plan rate to see the per-order cost and your true effective percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify charge transaction fees on top of processing fees?

Only if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments. Then Shopify adds its own transaction fee — 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.6% on Advanced — on top of whatever your gateway charges. With Shopify Payments enabled, that extra fee is waived, which is why most US stores use it despite gateway alternatives.

How much do higher Shopify plans save on processing?

Basic runs about 2.9% + 30¢ online, Shopify about 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced about 2.5% + 30¢. The 0.4-point gap between Basic and Advanced is $400 per $100k of sales — but Advanced costs roughly $315 more per month than Basic. The crossover sits near $80–90k of monthly card volume; below that, the cheaper plan usually wins.

Why is my effective rate higher than the advertised 2.9%?

The $0.30 fixed fee. It is 0.6 points on a $50 order but 1.5 points on a $20 order, so low-AOV stores pay meaningfully more than the headline rate. That is also the honest argument for bundles and free-shipping thresholds: raising average order value dilutes the fixed fee across more revenue per transaction.

Have Shopify rates changed before?

Yes — Shopify has adjusted plan pricing and processing rates several times, rates differ by country and card type (in-person Tap & Chip rates are lower, American Express and international cards can cost more), and negotiated rates exist on Plus. The fields here are editable: check your plan's current rate card in Shopify admin before modeling margins.
