Email math

Open Rate Calculator

The first gate every email must pass — measured against delivered mail, not the number you sent.

Open rate = unique opens ÷ delivered emails × 100. A campaign delivered to 10,000 inboxes that earns 2,100 unique opens has a 21% open rate — 210 opens per 1,000 delivered. The denominator matters: dividing by emails sent instead of delivered mixes deliverability problems into an engagement metric and flatters neither. E-commerce campaigns typically open between 15% and 30%, with automated flows running well above one-off promos. Enter your opens and delivered count to get the rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good email open rate for e-commerce?

Broadcast campaigns to a full list typically open at 15–30%; a healthy engaged list sits near the top of that range. Automated flows run much higher — welcome emails often exceed 50% because the recipient just asked to hear from you. Below 15% on broadcasts, suspect list fatigue, weak subject lines, or a deliverability problem pushing you to spam folders.

Why are open rates less reliable than they used to be?

Apple Mail Privacy Protection, enabled for most Apple Mail users since 2021, pre-fetches email images and fires the tracking pixel whether or not the human ever opened the message. That inflates open rates — often by 10–20 points on Apple-heavy lists. Treat opens as a directional trend metric, and lean on clicks and revenue for decisions that matter.

Should I divide by emails sent or emails delivered?

Delivered. Sent minus bounces equals delivered, and an email that never reached an inbox had no chance to be opened — including it punishes engagement for a deliverability issue. Track the two problems separately: bounce rate tells you about list hygiene, open rate about subject lines and sender reputation. This calculator expects the delivered figure from your platform.

How do I improve a low open rate?

In order of impact: send to people who recently engaged (mailbox providers reward this), fix your sending domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), test subject lines that create specific curiosity rather than shouting discounts, and keep a consistent from-name subscribers recognize. Sunsetting subscribers who have not opened in six months lifts the rate and protects future delivery.
