The right free-shipping minimum is not a round number — it is the point where extra order value pays for the label.

Free-shipping threshold = current AOV + (average shipping cost ÷ gross margin). With an $8.00 average shipping cost and a 40% gross margin, an order needs $20 of additional value to generate the $8 of margin that pays for the label — so a store with a $52 AOV should test a threshold near $72. Set it below AOV and you give away shipping on orders you were getting anyway; set it far above and nobody stretches. The sweet spot sits just past where customers already are, so adding one more item earns them free shipping and earns you the label back.

Frequently asked questions

Why add the extra value to AOV instead of using a rule like "AOV × 1.3"?

Because the multiplier rules ignore your economics. The stretch a threshold must produce depends on your shipping cost and margin: a store with $12 shipping and 30% margin needs $40 of extra basket, while one with $5 shipping and 60% margin needs $8. AOV × 1.3 happens to work only for stores whose numbers coincidentally fit it.

What if the suggested threshold feels too far above my AOV?

That is the calculator saying free shipping is expensive for your economics — low margin or high shipping cost. Options: raise the threshold anyway and accept fewer qualifiers, cut average shipping cost with lighter packaging or a better carrier deal, or skip sitewide free shipping and reserve it for high-margin bundles where the math clears.

Do customers actually add items to reach a free-shipping threshold?

Reliably — basket-stretching around free-shipping minimums is one of the most replicated effects in e-commerce, with stores commonly reporting AOV lifts of 15–30% after introducing a well-placed threshold. The visible progress nudge ("You’re $9 away from free shipping") does much of the work, so surface it in the cart.

Should I round the threshold to a clean number?

Yes — thresholds are marketing, and $75 communicates better than $72.40. Round up, not down, so the economics still clear, and keep the gap from AOV shoppable: if your catalog’s cheapest add-on item is $18, a threshold $9 above AOV strands customers with nothing sensible to add. Stock $10–20 add-ons near the cart.
