Worked examples
Light, bulky box — dim weight wins
| Length | 12 |
| Width | 10 |
| Height | 8 |
| Dim divisor | 139 |
| Actual weight | 4 |
| Dimensional weight (lb) | 7 |
| Billable weight (lb) | 7 |
A 4 lb package bills as 7 lb: you pay for 3 lb of air.
Dense, compact box — actual weight wins
| Length | 10 |
| Width | 8 |
| Height | 6 |
| Dim divisor | 139 |
| Actual weight | 9 |
| Dimensional weight (lb) | 4 |
| Billable weight (lb) | 9 |
Dim weight is only 4 lb, so the 9 lb scale weight sets the bill.
Frequently asked questions
Which divisor should I use?
FedEx and UPS use 139 for domestic and international daily rates in 2026; some negotiated contracts restore a friendlier 166, and USPS applies dimensional pricing with a 166 divisor only above one cubic foot. Divisors are carrier pricing levers and do change: verify the current number in your carrier’s service guide or contract before modeling costs.
How do I reduce dimensional weight charges?
Shrink the box. Because dim weight multiplies all three dimensions, one inch off each side of a 12 × 10 × 8 box cuts dim weight by roughly a third. Use two or three right-sized cartons instead of one universal box, switch flat items to padded mailers, and stop protecting a 4 oz product with 6 inches of air.
Why do carriers charge by size at all?
Trucks and planes run out of space before they run out of payload weight. A trailer full of pillows weighs little but earns little if billed by the scale, so carriers price the space a package consumes. Dimensional weight converts volume into an equivalent weight so bulky freight pays for the room it takes.
Is dimensional weight rounded, and how much does that matter?
Yes. Carriers round dimensional weight up to the next whole pound, and they also round measured dimensions up to the whole inch before multiplying. A box measuring 12.2 inches rates as 13. On small parcels that double rounding can add a billable pound or two, so design packaging just under whole-inch breakpoints.
