Frequently asked questions
What exactly does Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 cover?
It is the blended rate for a standard online card payment in the US: card network interchange, Stripe's margin, processing and payout. Extras stack on top — +1.5% for international cards, +1% for currency conversion, +0.5% for manually keyed cards, and Instant Payouts cost more. If most of your buyers are overseas, model 4.4% rather than 2.9%.
How do I pass the Stripe fee to the customer legally?
Surcharging card payments is restricted or capped in several US states and by card-network rules, so most businesses raise the price for everyone instead of adding a visible card fee. The gross-up output tells you the price that quietly absorbs the fee: to net $100, list at $103.30. For B2B invoices, offering an ACH option is usually cleaner.
Are refunds and disputes free on Stripe?
No. When you refund a charge, Stripe returns the money to the buyer but keeps the original processing fee, so a refunded $100 sale still costs you $3.20. A dispute (chargeback) costs a separate $15 fee that is returned only if you win. High-refund businesses should fold an expected refund rate into their pricing, not just the headline fee.
Do Stripe's rates change or vary by volume?
The advertised 2.9% + $0.30 has been stable for years, but it is a list price: businesses with meaningful volume negotiate custom pricing, and rates differ by country and payment method (ACH is 0.8% capped at $5). Both fields here are editable — enter your negotiated or regional rate, and confirm current pricing on Stripe's site.
