Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, OfferUp or Facebook Marketplace?
Facebook Marketplace, at every price point. Its 5% shipped-order fee is well under OfferUp's 12.9%, and its $0.40 minimum is far below OfferUp's $1.99. On a $50 sale that is $3.95 more in your pocket; on a $100 sale, $7.90. No crossover exists while the percentage rates stay this far apart.
Do these fees apply to local pickup sales?
No. Both platforms charge on shipped orders only — a local cash handoff is free on either. That matters more than the fee gap for most listings, because local sales are how the majority of furniture, appliances and bulky items move on both platforms. Set the fee percentage to 0 on either side to model a local sale.
Why does the gap look worse on cheap items?
OfferUp's $1.99 minimum overrides its percentage below about $15.43. On a $10 sale that floor is 19.9% of the price while Facebook charges 5% ($0.50). The effective rate you pay on OfferUp climbs as the price falls, which is why low-value shipped listings are the worst case for it.
Does a lower fee mean more money overall?
Only if the item sells for the same price and sells at all. Fee rate is one input; buyer volume and realized price are the others. OfferUp's shipping flow and buyer base can clear certain categories faster, and a faster sale at 12.9% can beat a listing that sits at 5%. Compare the fee gap against how long comparable items have been listed on each.
