What is the difference between Code 128 and EAN-13?

Code 128 is a variable-length symbology that encodes any letters, digits and symbols — perfect for internal SKUs, carton labels and anything you scan inside your own operation. EAN-13 is the fixed 13-digit retail barcode printed on consumer packaging worldwide; it only holds digits and its last digit is a computed check digit. Use Code 128 for internal use, EAN-13 when a store or marketplace requires a real product number.

Can I make my own UPC or EAN barcode for free?

You can generate the barcode image for free here, but a legitimate retail UPC/EAN number (GTIN) has to be assigned from GS1 — you cannot invent one that retailers and marketplaces will accept as unique. Enter a GTIN you already own and this tool renders a scannable EAN-13 with the correct check digit. For internal labels that need no global number, Code 128 has no such requirement.

Are these barcodes actually scannable?

Yes. Both symbologies are drawn to spec with correct module widths, check digits and quiet zones (the blank margin scanners need). Download the SVG for printing — it stays razor-sharp at any label size — and print at 100% scale without shrinking below about an inch wide so a scanner can resolve the bars.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?
